Manchester United have a level of protection in case Alejandro Garnacho is sold by Chelsea for a fee of £40million.

Garnacho got off to a slow start to his new campaign with the Blues. He spent two of the opening five games in all competitions this season on the bench and only started in Chelsea's EFL Cup clash with Lincoln.

However, in recent weeks, the 21-year-old has begun to find his feet. Garnacho has picked up two goals and two assists in his last four games under Enzo Maresca.

Although this will surely put a smile on the Chelsea manager's face, United fans may be concerned that their club has once again sold a player who could go on to excel elsewhere. But it seems United were wise to the situation, especially considering Chelsea's current transfer model.

Chelsea are known for acquiring young players with high potential on long-term contracts - Garnacho’s deal runs until 2032. The aim is to build a youthful squad and, when the time is right, sell players for a profit after developing their careers.

United were clearly aware of Chelsea’s approach, as the club inserted a 10% sell-on clause in Garnacho’s deal. This means that if Chelsea were to sell him for double his current value, around £80m, Ruben Amorim’s side would receive £8m from the transfer.

The Argentinian international left Old Trafford following a public disagreement with Amorim. Garnacho was unhappy with his limited playtime in the Europa League final.

He said: "Up until the final I played every round helping the team, and today I play 20 minutes, I don't know. The final will influence [my decision] but the whole season, the situation of the club. I'm going to try to enjoy the summer and see what happens afterwards."

Now seeking a fresh start at Chelsea, Garnacho will be hoping to prove Amorim wrong. United, on the other hand, will likely be content if their 10% sell-on clause eventually pays off.
