Liverpool are reportedly interested in Bayern Munich’s Dayot Upamecano to boost their centre-back options ahead of the January transfer window.

After the failed pursuit of Marc Guehi last summer, manager Arne Slot is left with only Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, and Joe Gomez following Giovanni Leoni’s season-ending ACL injury.

At 26, Upamecano fits Liverpool’s style as a ball-playing defender who thrives in a high defensive line. He is also entering the final year of his Bayern contract.

Bayern wants to secure him on a new deal due to wage disputes, but the France international could be available on a free transfer next summer if no extension is agreed upon.

Fabrizo Romano has also confirmed Liverpool interest in the player.

Since his transfer from RB Leipzig in 2021, Upamecano has played in over 150 matches for the German champions.

Now speaking to L ‘Equipe, the Bayern Munich defender has revealed that he is “grateful” for the interest and that he will make the “right decision” on his future:

“We’ll make the right decision. I’m well advised,” Upamecano told L’Equipe.

“I’ve always said I feel comfortable at Bayern. I have a great coach and teammates. I’m under contract at Bayern. I’m very grateful if there are clubs interested in me.”

Talks over a new contract have taken place, yet no agreement has been reached, and time is running out before he can begin discussions with foreign clubs.

Real Madrid are also reported to be among the suitors for the 26-year-old.
