The Philadelphia Eagles won ugly on Monday night, beating the Green Bay Packers, 10-7, at Lambeau Field.
Here are our position-by-position and coaching grades from Week 10.
Quarterback: B-
Jalen Hurts did enough to win; that’s the QB’s job. He connected with DeVonta Smith for a 36-yard touchdown pass. He didn’t throw an interception. And he moved the pocket, staying away from Micah Parsons as much as he could and avoiding unnecessary sacks. But there were enough shaky moments to keep him from a top grade. Two mistakes in particular stood out: the fumble that ended the opening drive and missing Grant Calcaterra for a possible TD.
Running back: C+
After breaking out for 150 yards vs. the Giants a couple weeks ago, Saquon Barkley was bottled up yet again. He had only 60 yards on 22 carries. There wasn’t much he could do. But Barkley made an impact in the passing game. He took a dump-off pass, spun past a defender and accelerated for an energizing 41-yard gain. On the next play, Smith scored.
Wide receiver/tight end: C+
Smith once again showed up. His contested catch TD was a thing of beauty. He also had a 16-yard grab on a third-and-12 in the fourth quarter. Smith is up to 336 receiving yards in his last three games. Elsewhere, A.J. Brown was limited to 13 yards on two catches; he did have a key block on Barkley’s catch-and-run. Dallas Goedert chipped in four catches for 43 yards.
Offensive line: B-
Losing right tackle Lane Johnson to an ankle injury in the second quarter made things more difficult. Credit to the 35-year-old for coming back in late in the fourth quarter. Rushing for only 111 yards on 34 carries (3.3 yards per carry) is a reflection of the o-line. Outside of the run game, right tackle Jordan Mailata had a couple glaring mistakes. But overall, the group held Parsons and the Packers to zero sacks. That was important.
Defensive line: A
The defensive front dominated. Jaelan Phillips had six tackles, a fumble recovery and a fourth-quarter TFL in his first game as an Eagle. Nolan Smith, in his first game off IR, had a sack and a key fourth-quarter pressure. Jalyx Hunt had a sack and a TFL. Jalen Carter batted two passes. Moro Ojomo directed running plays and pressured Jordan Love. Awesome stuff.
Linebackers: B+
Nakobe Dean was all over the field. His strip sack made Love look silly and stopped a dangerous Green Bay drive at the end of the first half. Dean was also integral in limiting Josh Jacobs to 74 yards on 21 carries (3.5 yards per attempt). Dean had seven tackles while Zack Baun had a team-high eight stops. Jihaad Campbell had a couple moments to forget, giving a 21-yard pass interference and getting bowled over on Jacobs’ touchdown.
Secondary: B+
Love was limited to 176 passing yards, completing 20 of 36 passes and producing a 68.8 passer rating. Most of Love’s yards came late. But for the majority of the game, the secondary was on lockdown duty. Quinyon Mitchell was especially sticky in coverage. Cooper DeJean didn’t have his best stuff. Reed Blankenship had seven tackles.
Coaching: B-
A lot of credit to Vic Fangio. His defense was menacing all night long. Kevin Patullo was the subject of fans’ ire yet again. The Eagles went three-and-out three times, and the coward’s draws on third-and-long were frustratingly conservative. But ultimately, Nick Sirianni — even with a controversial fourth-down decision late in the game — pulled out a win against an NFC contender on the road. He and his staff will have plenty to correct before facing the Lions. But they’ll do so at 7-2 with a three-game winning streak.
