Sitting just two points above the relegation zone, it's safe to say that things aren't exactly going according to plan for Newcastle United so far this season.

While Newcastle are going well in the cup competitions and are doing a decent job at St James' Park, something just isn't clicking away from home in the Premier League.

The Magpies started the campaign with three 0-0 draws on the road and have since followed that up with three defeats.

It's not surprising, then, that the players' mentality has been called into question as they can only seem to perform in front of their own fans.

Happy birthday, Jamaal Lascelles

Jamaal Lascelles praises the Newcastle fans for sticking by them during poor results

Newcastle World asked club captain Jamaal Lascelles about whether it was a mentality issue, but the defender who turns 32 today, denied it's a mentality thing while going on to thank the fans for sticking by them through this tough time.

“No, it's not for us. Home or away, we approach every single game with the same attitude, same mentality. Obviously, the results aren't there. So I get why people might think it will be a thing. It's just down to us players to make sure that it stops.

“Us as players, we know at home the fans do give us an extra 5%. Away teams, when they come to St James' Park, it's their worst place to come because of the fans. So yeah, they do give us an extra boost. But we approach every game the same. Our fans were loud tonight. Even though the numbers aren't the same at St James’, they were singing the whole time. They applauded us after the game, like they always do. We just need to find the answer of just winning the game.

“We appreciate them massively for that at home and away, they're great. The club's been really successful in the past few years, we won a trophy. We just need to make sure as players that it doesn't stop there, that we keep growing. We keep finding a way to win. We keep giving the fans more of a reason to keep driving us.”

It seems like a mentality issue to us

If it's not a mentality issue, then what is it? Nobody seems to have an answer for what is going on and fans are rapidly running out of patience.

We've already got the Howe Out brigade in full voice and it's only a matter of time before they start picking up recruits unless results change soon.

Whether we need a tactic chance, or the players need to admit and face up to the fact that it is a mentality problem, something has to give and soon!
