The latest Newcastle injury news ahead of their match against Manchester City - including updates on Yoane Wissa, Anthony Gordon, Joelinton and more.
Newcastle United have endured a relatively difficult start to the Premier League season – and things won’t get much easier after the November international break, with a home game against Manchester City next up while a number of players struggle with injuries.
Anthony Gordon, Joelinton and Nick Pope are among the key starters carrying fitness issues into the break, while Eddie Howe will also be hoping that he can call upon Valentino Livramento and summer signing Yoane Wissa before long – but of the seven players dealing with injury problems, how many will be ready to face City on 22 November?
We’ve got all of the latest Newcastle injury news below, along with the stricken players’ expected return dates when available.
Will Yoane Wissa be available to face Manchester City?
Wissa sustained a knee injury while on international duty with the Democratic Republic of Congo shortly after completing his summer move from Brentford and has yet to make his Newcastle debut as a result – and the wait continues despite initial reports suggesting that he be available in early November.
The 29-year-old forward is now back in training and Howe provided a positive update on his situation prior to the 3-1 defeat to Wissa’s former club over the weekend.
"He's working well,” Howe told the media. “He's on the grass and he's building his fitness. The knee is feeling good and there's no problems with that… He's in a good place to kick on and push his body. We need to give him time to get robust enough and be in a position to give his best for the team. I'm sure he'll be worth the wait."
As it stands, however, it seems somewhat unlikely that Wissa – who was not called up to his national squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifier against Cameroon – will be ready to play against Manchester City. The game against Everton the following weekend may be a more realistic target.
Will any of Newcastle’s injured players be back after the international break?
While the wait for Wissa’s debut is likely to drag on a little longer, a number of Newcastle’s other injured players could well be back in action ahead of the game against Manchester City.
Anthony Gordon will miss England’s matches due to a groin issue described by Howe as a “minor injury” but is expected to be fit again after the break, while Valentino Livramento (knee) and Joelinton (calf) are in line to return in time for next Saturday’s match.
There is less certainty over the availability of first-choice goalkeeper Nick Pope as he recovers from a concussion, while striker William Osula is unlikely to be available due to an ankle injury which could keep him sidelined for “weeks.” The Dane is likely to return in early December barring further setbacks.
Full-back Harrison Ashby, meanwhile, is out for an unspecified length of time due to a serious thing injury. The club have not yet provided a likely return date or any estimate of how long the 23-year-old will be unavailable for. Howe’s squad selection will be further complicated by Dan Burn’s suspension – the defender will miss the City match after receiving a red card against Brentford.
