Exclusive: What Chelsea are currently doing ahead of 2026 with Julian Alvarez considering Atletico Madrid future

The Chelsea Chronicle has been given an update on the future of Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez.

Chelsea were linked with Alvarez in the summer of 2024 before his move from Manchester City to Atletico Madrid, which has proven to be a success.

In 15 appearances for the Spanish club this season, the 25-year-old has already scored nine goals.

The Club World Cup winners did not get their hands on him back then, but a move to Stamford Bridge in the near future is not being ruled out.

Chelsea keeping tabs on Julian Alvarez

The Chelsea Chronicle understands that Alvarez is currently considering his options and Chelsea are one club monitoring his situation at Atletico.

On the Argentine, our transfer insider Graeme Bailey said: “Alvarez has quietly emerged as one of the best strikers in Europe. He has been very good for Atletico, outstanding even, but intermediaries are making it clear that he is considering his options.

“Whilst Barca seems the most likely option for him — PSG and Chelsea are very much keeping close tabs on the situation. I am told that clearly Barca and PSG appeal to Alvarez, but don’t rule out a move to London with Chelsea.

“There is also Enzo Maresca. He and Alvarez worked well together during their time together at Manchester City. It’s one to keep an eye on. If Alvarez does become available this summer, I wouldn’t dismiss Chelsea at all.”

There will be at least one new striker who joins Chelsea in 2026, with Emanuel Emegha set to arrive from Strasbourg.

After scoring a brace against Lille last weekend, some Chelsea fans have called for Emegha to replace Liam Delap.

Julian Alvarez’s record at Atletico Madrid last season

Interest in Alvarez from Chelsea, Barcelona and PSG is hardly a shock after a stunning 2024/25 campaign where the Argentina international managed to score 29 goals in all competitions.

Seven of his goals came in the Champions League as Atletico went on to reach the round of 16, where they were knocked out by city rivals Real Madrid.

Julian Alvarez’s 2024/25 stats Appearances Goals Assists

La Liga 37 17 4

Champions League 10 7 1

Copa del Rey 7 5 2

Club World Cup 3 0 1

Total 57 29 8

Alvarez’s experience in the Premier League will also make him an attractive proposition to Chelsea, who already have a few Argentines in their squad, including Enzo Fernandez.

However, with Emegha linking up with Maresca’s group next year, the Blues may have to offload one or two of their forwards before bringing in Alvarez.

Maresca’s management has been good since arriving at Chelsea from Leicester City last summer, but the Italian will not be able to keep Alvarez, Emegha, Delap, Joao Pedro and Marc Guiu all happy.
