Ruben Amorim reportedly smashed a television in the dressing room following Manchester United's dismal defeat to Brighton in January - but the furious outburst is believed to have actually benefited him.

The Portuguese manager was just a few months into his role when things began to turn sour. Following a troublesome December which saw United lose five matches, there was no upturn in January.

Amorim's problems deepened when Brighton secured a 3-1 triumph at Old Trafford, with ex-player Danny Welbeck finding the net and Andre Onana come up with another expensive error.

The Portuguese manager couldn't conceal his anger as he delivered a fierce dressing-down to his squad and proceeded to destroy a television as his temper boiled over after yet another humiliating home loss.

Nevertheless his dramatic action struck a chord with several United players. They completely grasped how deeply he cared as he expressed dismay at their predicament, with some reportedly developing greater admiration for the ex-Sporting Lisbon manager, reports the Telegraph.

It was during that Sunday afternoon that Amorim himself contentiously claimed his team were "maybe the worst" in the club's 147-year existence as they confronted the possibility of a relegation scrap.

He said: "In [the past] 10 games in Premier League, we won two. Imagine what this is for a fan of Manchester United. Imagine what this is for me. We are getting a new coach who is losing more than the last coach. I have full knowledge of that. We are the worst team maybe in the history of Manchester United. I know you [media] want headlines but I am saying that because we have to acknowledge that and to change that. Here you go: your headlines."

Amorim also made his frustration abundantly clear when his side travelled to Everton in February - just a month on from the Brighton humiliation. He was livid after the opening 45 minutes, which saw United go in at the break 2-0 down at Goodison Park.

He would make only the briefest appearance in the changing room before heading back out. Amorim spent the majority of the 15-minute interval pacing the corridor outside, staring at the floor.

It fell to Darren Fletcher, then first-team coach, to deliver the home truths to United's squad. They managed to fight back and salvage a 2-2 draw.
