Wolves will hope their former defender can guide them to Premier League survival after their poor start to the season
They find themselves in the bottom three along with West Ham and Nottingham Forest after their 3-0 loss away at Chelsea last time out before the international break. Eight points separate them from 17th position Burnley. Next up is a home clash against Crystal Palace on Saturday 22nd November.
Wolves move for Rob Edwards could open door for Steven Gerrard
Middlesbrough will be weighing up potential options to fill the void left by Edwards’ impending exit. According to the Scottish Sun, former Aston Villa man Steven Gerrard is being ‘considered’ by the Boro hierarchy. The 45-year-old has been out of the dugout since January and has been considering his next move.
Gerrard, who made 114 caps for the England national team, spent his career at Liverpool before hanging up his boots in 2016 after a year at LA Galaxy in America. He subsequently delved into the managerial world and landed his first role at Rangers in 2018 after a stint coaching in the academy at Anfield. The Merseyside-born man guided the Gers to the Scottish Premiership title ahead of Celtic during his time at Ibrox.
He left Ibrox for a new challenge down the border in England when Aston Villa came calling back in 2021. Gerrard spent 11 months at Villa Park and won 32.5% of matches before he was dismissed. He then made the move to Saudi Arabia when Al-Ettifaq swooped in but he left the Middle East last winter.
What now for Wolves and Middlesbrough?
Wolves will be hoping that Edwards can inspire them to an upturn in form. They could do with bringing in some quality when the January transfer window opens up for business. They have the chance to freshen up their ranks this winter as they look to claw themselves away from danger.
Edwards knows the club inside out already having previously played and coach at Molineux. He managed England U16s, Forest Green Rovers, Watford and Luton Town before Middlesbrough turned to him as their replacement for Michael Carrick in the summer. Boro are currently sat in 2nd place behind Frank Lampard’s Coventry City and have made an eye-catching start to this term.
They have a massive decision to make on who to bring in next and whoever comes in will be inheriting a decent squad for second tier level. Gerrard has never managed in the Championship before but could see this post as an opportunity to get back in and show what he can do. His time at Aston Villa didn’t go to plan in the end and he went off the grid a bit in Saudi Arabia so may feel that he has a point to prove now.
