“It would be fantastic” – Sunderland star keeping feet on the ground, ambitions staying realistic

Sunderland star Robin Roefs has admitted he’s keeping his Netherlands ambitions realistic ahead of the World Cup.

Voetbal International have comments from him today. It seems he’s keeping his feet firmly on the ground despite a strong start to life in the Premier League.

Roefs has been impressing at Sunderland since arriving from NEC Nijmegen in the summer. He’s managed four clean sheets in 11 Premier League games to date, proving to be key to Sunderland’s superb start to the season.

His form has earned him international recognition, with a call-up to the Netherlands squad for this international break. He is yet to make his senior debut, but has represented the Dutch at various youth levels.

He’ll be number three in the squad behind Bart Verbruggen and Mark Flekken. The former is now the established number one under Ronald Koeman. That is unlikely to change after he won the battle with Flekken for the role over the last two years.

The Sunderland goalkeeper is more than aware of that and instead admits that he’s more than happy to just be a part of the squad that eventually heads to the World Cup.

“I’ve been the third-choice goalkeeper so far,” he said.

“Of course, things are going well at Sunderland, but the other two are also doing really well. We’ll see who’s in goal in the coming matches.

“It would be fantastic if I could at least go. My first goal is to be there and experience the World Cup. If I’m allowed to do that at my age, it would be a fantastic experience.”
