The Memphis Grizzlies couldn’t keep up with the Oklahoma City Thunder on Sunday night and lost to the reigning champions 114-100. But they probably would have had a better chance if their star player had been performing well.
Ja Morant had another off-night, posting just 11 points, three rebounds, and eight assists. Sadly, that follows a painful trend for him because over the last five games, Morant has averaged 15.0 points, 9.2 assists, and 3.8 rebounds on 27.6 percent from the field and only 10.7 percent from the three-point line.

For the season so far, those totals bump up to 19.2 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 7.9 assists. Morant is simply not playing like the leader the Grizzlies are used to.
This all comes at a tricky time for the team and their star. It seems increasingly likely that Morant could be leaving the Grizzlies and some of his public statements have made it obvious that he’s no longer happy playing in Memphis.
If he did leave, that would be a large blow for the Grizzlies, although it may be best if he’s truly unhappy with his current situation. But will he increase his output before he leaves the team?
If he continues to play poorly, Morant’s trade value will plummet, and that could hurt the Grizzlies and prevent them from creating the sort of future they need. But right now, Morant is in a rut, and it’s not clear what will get him out of it.
For years, he was the most valuable player in Memphis, but his production had been tarnished over the last few seasons due to his on-court work and bad off-court choices. It really feels like this is the end of his chapter with the Grizzlies, and he is going out with a whimper instead of a bang.
