Saquon Barkley Incident May Bring NFL Discipline for Packers' Micah Parsons

The Green Bay Packers fell to 5-3-1 on the season with the team’s second straight loss after a 10-7 defeat at the hands of the Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles.

Green Bay limited the Eagles offense to under 300 total yards while holding star running back Saquon Barkley to just 60 yards on the ground on 22 carries. After the game head coach Matt LaFleur praised the defense’s effort while calling out his offense that managed just one touchdown.

"Our defense was outstanding. Unfortunately, just too many mistakes offensively to overcome it," LaFleur said after the game. "You hold good football teams to 10 points you should win the football game, but obviously we didn't do enough offensively. We've got a short week. We can't feel sorry for ourselves. We've got to figure it out, come back and do better."

While the Packers defense remained stout, there was one play where Barkley may have ripped off a long run if not for an illegal play from star linebacker Micah Parsons. Late in the fourth quarter with the Eagles leading 10-7, Barkley took a handoff and flew through a gap in the defensive line before getting tripped up by Parsons, who whipped his leg out in an effort to keep the star running back from breaking off a long run.

The NFL has cracked down on tripping penalties so far this season, handing out sizable fines to five players over the past two weeks alone. In Week 8, Buffalo Bills star Joey Bosa and Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver DK Metcalf were both hit with fines over $12,000 for “striking/kicking/kneeing/tripping.”

The following week Jacksonville’s Travon Walker, Las Vegas Raiders linebacker Devin White and New York Giants defensive back Dane Belton were also fined by the league for the same thing.

Parsons could be looking at a similar punishment for his actions in Monday night’s loss.
