It was unsurprising on Monday when the Giants decided to finally part ways with head coach Brian Daboll after blowing a 10-point lead against the Bears and falling to 2-8.
But at least one person thinks New York should have kept Daboll around.
“I’m of the belief this is a mistake by the New York Giants,” ESPN analyst and former NFL quarterback Dan Orlovsky said Monday on NFL Live. “It was clear that the quarterback and head coach had something going together. The fourth-quarter leads are obviously something that you’re sitting there and killing yourself over, [but] this team lost its best player (wide receiver Malik Nabers), and then they lost probably their second or third best, certainly offensive weapon in Cam Skattebo. The fact that they had built these leads should warrant something.”
Orlovsky also brought up the relationship between Daboll and rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart, whom Daboll had a hand in selecting in the first round of this year’s draft.
“I think that Brian Daboll and Jaxson Dart should have stayed together for at least another year,” he said.
In his first season with the Giants in 2022, Daboll went 9-7-1 and won a wild-card playoff game in Minnesota. He was named Coach of the Year.
Since then, he has gone 6-11 in 2023, 3-14 in 2024 and now 2-8 this year.
Offensive coordinator Mike Kafka will serve as interim head coach for the Giants.
