NBA star Cade Cunningham etched his name into the history books after breaking a record held by Kobe Bryant, however, it's not exactly one he'll be boasting about.

The Detroit Pistons guard put on an emphatic showing to drag his team to a dramatic 137-135 overtime win against the Washington Wizards on Monday night.

He recorded an impressive triple-double - 46 points, 12 rebounds, 11 assists - on the night but fans were quick to pick up on another notable aspect of his stat line.

Cunningham's 46 points came from a staggering 45 shots - meaning that the 24-year-old made just 14 of his attempts. That's a 31 per cent field goal percentage.

His 31 missed shots is the highest recorded in single NBA game since the merger back in 1976-1977, breaking the previous record held by Kobe Bryant.

Kobe set the record back in November 2002, when he scored 41 points on 17-of-47 shooting during an overtime defeat against the Celtics.

Despite his unwanted record-breaking night, he still produced a triple-double

The record was previously set by Kobe Bryant during a game back in November 2002

Interestingly, Bryant was also second on the list for his 28 missed shots during a game in 2016.

The former Lakers star also boasts the record for the most shot attempts in a game, which also came during a 2016 game where he made 50 attempts.

Cunningham now places seventh on that list after his endeavors on Monday night.

The 24-year-old's performance against the Wizards felt like a bizarre paradox. Though he broke the record for missed shot attempts, he also became just the second Pistons player in franchise history with a 40-point triple-double.

The win means the Pistons move to 9-2 for the season as they prepare to take on the Chicago Bulls on Wednesday night.
