Inside Elland Road: Defensive solidity is vital for Leeds Utd
The FA have charged Burnley’s Hannibal Mejbri with misconduct after an allegation of spitting during Leeds United’s visit to Turf Moor.
It emerged after the game that Lancashire Police were looking into an incident involving the Clarets man, which allegedly took place during the second half. Mejbri, one of the Burnley substitutes, passed in front of Leeds fans to deliver a message to his goalkeeper. It was when he passed back along the front of the stand that fans then visibly reacted angrily to something. Police officers in the stand were made aware of an allegation of spitting at full-time.
A statement from Lancashire Police on Sunday October 19 said: “Lancashire Police are aware of an alleged incident involving a Burnley player during the second half of the Premier League game between Burnley and Leeds United at Turf Moor yesterday (Saturday 18th October). We are currently working with Burnley Football Club to establish the facts.”
The FA confirmed shortly after that they too were aware of the incident and they have now charged the 22-year-old with misconduct relating to the allegation. A spokesperson said: “Burnley’s Hannibal Mejbri has been charged with misconduct following their Premier League fixture against Leeds United on Saturday 18 October.
“It’s alleged that the player acted in breach of the Laws of the Game and/or in an improper manner and/or used abusive and/or indecent behaviour by spitting at or in the direction of Leeds United supporters around the 67th minute. Hannibal Mejbri has until Friday 28 November to provide a response.”
The YEP contacted Lancashire Police last week for an update but there has been no response.
