Writing in a statement on Tuesday afternoon, the FA has confirmed that Hannibal has been charged after an incident during Burnley vs Leeds...
"Burnley’s Hannibal Mejbri has been charged with misconduct following their Premier League fixture against Leeds United on Saturday 18 October. It’s alleged that the player acted in breach of the Laws of the Game and/or in an improper manner and/or used abusive and/or indecent behaviour by spitting at or in the direction of Leeds United supporters around the 67th minute. Hannibal Mejbri has until Friday 28 November to provide a response."
Hannibal now has just over two weeks to respond to the charge, and although he's been charged, a verdict is yet to be reached in terms of a potential punishment. Norwich City's Borja Sainz, back in January, received a six-game ban and was fined £12,000 for spitting at an opponent in a fairly similar incident.
At the time of the incident, Lancashire police released their own statement, confirming that they were investigating the situation, and were working with Burnley. A statement from Lancashire Police on Sunday October 19th said:
“Lancashire Police are aware of an alleged incident involving a Burnley player during the second half of the Premier League game between Burnley and Leeds United at Turf Moor yesterday (Saturday 18th October). We are currently working with Burnley Football Club to establish the facts.”
Hannibal made the move to Burnley back in 2024 during the summer transfer window, joining the club from Manchester United on a four-year deal. The Tunisian international helped the Lancashire outfit gain promotion from the Championship to the Premier League, and has remained in Parker's plans for the 2025/2026 campaign. The FA will now await Hannibal's response before a decision is made on the matter.
