Former Leeds United man speaks out amid Middlesbrough links

Leeds United boss Daniel Farke loves a hostile football ground

A former Leeds United coach has been linked with the managerial vacancy at Championship club Middlesbrough.

Rob Edwards is closing in on being appointed as manager of Wolverhampton Wanderers as Leeds United’s relegation rivals look to their former player to guide them to safety this season.

The former Luton Town boss was named as Middlesbrough manager during the summer and has led the Riverside Stadium club into second place in the Championship table during his first four months in charge. However, Wolves made an approach to the Boro hierarchy over the weekend after opting to part ways with former boss Vitor Pereira and although that approach was initially rejected, Edwards appears to have made it clear he wished to discuss the opportunity to take charge of his old club.

After a compensation package was agreed, Wolves have moved a step closer to appointed Edwards and a formal announcement is expected over the coming days. For Boro, the focus is now on appointing a successor and several high profile candidates have been linked with the role after the likes of Michael Carrick, Steven Gerrard and Brendan Rodgers were all suggested as possible targets.

Speaking after Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Real Betis left his side sitting in the La Lig relegation zone, he told Diario AS: “My commitment to Valencia and to turning this situation around is the strongest possible. This group is going to give their all to change the team’s situation because nobody wants to be where we are. The dressing room is completely united. We’re surprised that anyone is questioning that unity. I couldn’t be happier with my players. I feel the same support from the club as I did from the first day I arrived. When the results are not as desired, it generates a context of demand. That leads you to do something extra. It's painful to see us where we are, but this is elite soccer and we play with the best teams”
