Dallas Mavericks are firing GM Nico Harrison

Dallas Mavericks fans have been asking team owner Patrick Dumont for just one thing for the past nine months. Ever since he traded Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers, they have wanted Nico Harrison fired. And it seems like the Mavs faithful have had their wish granted on Tuesday.

Harrison has been the team’s General Manager for the last four years. During his tenure, the franchise went to the NBA Finals. For much of his tenure, he commanded a lot of respect from the fanbase, too. But all of that went out of the window when he traded Luka, and it’s time for Nico to pay the piper.

For a while, it looked like the Mavericks getting the No. 1 pick in the NBA Draft would save Nico’s job. However, the roster isn’t maximizing Cooper Flagg either, and he’s struggled to start the year. The team has an abysmal 3-8 record, with losses to some of the worst teams in the league.

The writing was on the wall from the minute he traded Doncic. Kyrie Irving’s injury was unfortunate, although Anthony Davis’ struggles on that front are a tad more predictable. The backlash was so bad after the Luka trade, though, that Harrison had taken to hiding in the arena tunnel while watching games.

Firing Harrison and acknowledging the trade as a mistake is a step in the right direction by the owners. Fans will feel vindicated, and the team can focus purely on basketball. This move marks the beginning of the end of a terrible chapter in Dallas’ sporting history. Time for a fresh start.
