Mike Tomlin linked to NFC franchise’s vacant head-coaching job

The New York Giants are searching for a new head coach after firing Brian Daboll on Monday. The 2022 Coach of the Year award winner exited the team with a 20-40-1 record (2-8 this campaign).

As soon as fans and analysts learned about the Daboll news, many started speculating about who could replace him. Ian O’Connor of The Athletic mentioned Mike Tomlin as a fitting candidate for the “Big Blue.”

“The Steelers coach has ripped off 18 consecutive non-losing seasons (15 of them winning seasons) and is working on No. 19,” O’Connor wrote. “He is a card-carrying tough guy and a two-time Super Bowl participant and one-time champ who would be a human firewall against the disastrous seasons the Giants regularly serve up to their paying customers. Pairing a young franchise quarterback-to-be in Jaxson Dart with Tomlin’s institutional knowledge on what it takes to succeed in the NFL would be the Giants’ best bet for long-term bliss.”

The Giants once again collapsed in the fourth quarter against the Chicago Bears. With Jaxson Dart out of the game after his head hit the ground during a play, the Bears scored two touchdowns to return from a 20-10 deficit and win the game 24-20.

The way Daboll wanted Jaxson Dart to play proved detrimental to the coach’s future with the franchise. He now looks for new opportunities in the league, with a return to the Buffalo Bills potentially in the cards.

Tomlin’s Steelers suffered a 25-10 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday. Aaron Rodgers went 16 of 31 for 161 yards and one touchdown. At 5-4 they are getting dangerously close to losing the first spot in the AFC North standings, as the Baltimore Ravens (4-5) continue to improve.

Many questioned Tomlin’s future with the Steelers last season. Some think this could be his last campaign with the team if they fail to win a playoff game again.
