Burnley midfielder Hannibal Mejbri has been charged with misconduct by the Football Association after allegedly spitting at or in the direction of Leeds supporters last month.
The matter relates to an incident in the 67th minute of the Clarets’ 2-0 Premier League win over Leeds at Turf Moor on October 18.
Mejbri had been among the substitutes at the time of the alleged incident. He went on to enter the game in the 83rd minute and was booked following a clash with Leeds defender Gabriel Gudmundsson.
An FA spokesperson said: “Burnley’s Hannibal Mejbri has been charged with misconduct following their Premier League fixture against Leeds United on Saturday 18 October.
“It’s alleged that the player acted in breach of the Laws of the Game and/or in an improper manner and/or used abusive and/or indecent behaviour by spitting at or in the direction of Leeds United supporters around the 67th minute.”
The FA statement added: “Hannibal Mejbri has until Friday 28 November to provide a response.”
As reported by the Burnley Express last month, the visiting side were made aware of the allegation after a complaint was made by a supporter in the away section. Leeds subsequently passed on the complaint to police.
Over that weekend, Lancashire Police confirmed to the Burnley Express that they were working with the Clarets to establish the facts surrounding the alleged incident. It was also confirmed at the time, the FA were also looking into the matter.
What has Burnley boss Scott Parker previously said about the incident?
“I can't comment on that,” Parker said during the pre-Wolves press conference. “There's a live investigation going on regarding that, so I can't really comment on that at this present moment in time.”
