The Mavericks are firing general manager Nico Harrison on Tuesday morning, according to multiple reports. ESPN’s Shams Charania reports that the firing will occur in a meeting with team governor Patrick Dumont.
The Mavericks have gotten off to a 3-8 start this season, including a 2-6 record at home, following a franchise-altering trade of Luka Doncic last February to the Lakers for Anthony Davis.
Doncic helped lead the Mavericks to the 2024 NBA Finals appearance before falling to the Celtics in five games. Harrison elected to trade the young superstar after that run last February for a 31-year-old Davis, who has dealt with injuries throughout his career.
Harrison has dealt with constant “Fire Nico” chants from the Dallas fanbase in the fallout from the Doncic trade. A torn ACL for Kyrie Irving last March has not helped the Dallas outlook. The same goes for other questionable roster decisions after the Doncic deal, including trading away Quentin Grimes for Caleb Martin and signing veteran point guard D’Angelo Russell.
The Mavericks got some good luck in June by landing the No. 1 overall pick with a 1.8 percent chance in the draft lottery, leading to draft phenom Cooper Flagg. However, the rookie has not been able to carry a flawed Mavericks to begin the year with Davis having missed six games already due to a calif injury and Irving sidelined until at least midseason.
It is unclear yet who will serve in an interim role as Mavericks general manager following Harrison’s dismissal.
