Nov. 11 (UPI) -- Royal Spanish Football Federation officials criticized Barcelona on Tuesday for a lack of information about Lamine Yamal's groin injury treatment.
Yamal started Barcelona's last six games, including a 4-2 win over Celta Vigo on Sunday in Vigo, Spain. He scored four goals and provided three assists over that span. Barcelona announced Tuesday that the 18-year-old striker underwent a "specific treatment required to ensure full recovery" from his recently sustained injury.
"The [federation's] medical services wish to express their surprise and concern after learning at 1:47 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 10, the day of the official start of the national team's training camp, that Yamal had undergone an invasive radio frequency procedure to treat his pubic discomfort that same morning," the federation said in a news release.
"This procedure was performed without prior notification to the national team's medical staff, who only learned of the details through a report received at 10:40 p.m. on Monday, which indicated a medical recommendation for rest for 7-10 days.
"In view of this situation, and prioritizing the player's health, safety and well-being at all times, the [federation] has taken the decision to release the player from the current squad."
Yamal last played for Spain during a 6-0 win over Turkey in a Sept. 7 World Cup qualifier. He returned to Barcelona with the injury and went on to miss four games in September and additional time in October. Yamal returned to Barcelona's lineup Oct. 18 for the first match in his run of six-consecutive appearances.
Spain, the No. 1 team in the FIFA men's world ranking, will take on No. 70 Georgia in a World Cup qualifier Saturday in Tbilisi, Georgia. They will host No. 26 Turkey in another qualifier Nov. 18 in Sevilla.
Spain called up forward Jorge de Frutos of Rayo Vallecano in Yamal's place.
Barcelona, who are on international break, will host Athletic Club in a La Liga match on Nov. 22 at Lluis Companys Olympic Stadium.
