“He Desires a Return”: NFL Insider Lists Bill Belichick As Potential Head Coach Candidate For…

Before Bill Belichick became an NFL head coach, he was the defensive coordinator for the New York Giants for two Super Bowl titles when he was coaching Lawrence Taylor. Belichick has had a long career of coaching in the NFL and winning Super Bowls with the New England Patriots.

He hasn’t been successful in the NFL in a while. Currently, Belichick is the head coach of the North Carolina Tar Heels. With the Giants firing head coach Brian Daboll on Monday, is there a chance that Belichick could return to the NFL sidelines soon?

Dan Benton of giantswire.usatoday.com wrote about 18 different possible candidates to be the next head coach of the Giants. One of those possible candidates could potentially be former Patriots head coach Belichick. There are some New York fans that would want this and some that would not want this at all.

Benton said,

“Bill Belichick has never been shy about his love for the Giants and his history with the franchise. It’s also been made abundantly clear that he desires a return, although it would require a North Carolina buy-back. The problem with Belichick is his desire to control. If general manager Joe Schoen isn’t tossed out with the bathwater as well, Belichick is unlikely to consider the Giants. Even if John Mara and Steve Tisch opt to fire Schoen at the end of the year, which they suggest they won’t, would they be willing to give Belichick the power he desires? That’s a tricky one.”

He should be near the bottom of the list for this franchise. The top five candidates potentially for this franchise will be Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak, San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh, Green Bay Packers defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley, Los Angeles Chargers defensive coordinator Jesse Minter, and Kansas City Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo.

It doesn’t appear as if Ole Miss Rebels head coach Lane Kiffin or Notre Dame Fighting Irish head coach Marcus Freeman would leave college to go coach in the NFL. The Giants need someone who can lead this locker room. In the end, the top three candidates for this job should be Kubiak, Saleh, and Minter. It will be interesting to see what they do, but Belichick would not be the right guy for this opening.
