Liverpool are reportedly considering targets as they prepare for life after Mohamed Salah

Another target has reportedly come to the fore as Liverpool begin to prepare for life after Mohamed Salah.

Salah has been one of the most-criticised parties so far this season as the Reds have struggled in recent weeks. The 33-year-old, who bagged 29 goals and 18 assists last season, set lofty expectations for himself but has been inconsistent since signing his new two-year deal at Anfield.

The need to replace Salah may not be urgent just yet but the groundwork is being done for when the day comes. Previous targets such as Antoine Semenyo and Michael Olise have emerged as plausible contenders, while another name from the Premier League has reportedly come into contention.

Liverpool plot move for Brighton’s Yankuba Minteh

According to reports by Football Insider, Brighton & Hove Albion winger Yankuba Minteh is being considered as a ‘long-term replacement’ for Salah when he does eventually move on from Liverpool.

While any move for Minteh is not thought of to be imminent, the Reds are looking to reunite the 21-year-old with Arne Slot, whom he worked with at Feyenoord. Minteh is quoted as being one of the “most exciting” players in the Premier League on his day, and Liverpool recognise his potential despite his goalscoring output not coming close to that of Salah as of yet.

Brighton are ‘reluctant to sell’ Minteh and could demand £60m - £70m for their The Gambia international, who has already contributed one goal and three assists so far this season and registered six goals and four assists last campaign in his debut Premier League season. The Seagulls signed Minteh for £30m from Newcastle United last summer and he has settled into life quickly on the south coast, as speculation over a bigger move at some stage begins to grow.

‘Exciting’ Minteh wanted at Anfield

Transfer Correspondent Pete O’Rourke told Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast: “Minteh is a very exciting player, one of the most exciting players in the Premier League on his day. Obviously there is the obvious links with Arne Slot, having worked with him in his final season in charge of Feyenoord as well.

“No surprise that maybe Liverpool are looking at him. Obviously, there’s the ongoing speculation of looking for a long-term replacement for Mohamed Salah. Minteh obviously has Premier League experience now as well and having known worked with Slot before, so it’s a deal that would make sense. He could tick a lot of boxes, but I don’t think there’s anything imminent on this one just yet.”

With his mixture of raw pace and trickery and an ability to contribute to goals which is only likely to improve, there is no wonder that the Reds have been linked with Minteh as they put their long-term plans in place for the future. Whether he is chosen to be a direct replacement for Salah in the coming years remains to be seen, but it would not be surprising to see the winger get a big move to a Premier League giant soon enough.
