Wayne Rooney says Everton fans did something that really hurt him

Wayne Rooney was in attendance for Everton’s win over Fulham at the weekend, but there is something that still hurts him following his time on Merseyside.

Although Rooney did not get to witness a goal scored by an Everton striker, Saturday’s display against Fulham was emphatic.

David Moyes will now be able to enjoy the international break with a bit of pressure taken off his shoulders from results over recent weeks.

After the game, Rooney shared a three-word Everton message as he posed for a photo opportunity at the state-of-the-art new stadium.

He could not have picked a better game to attend with his son as the Toffees put on a show for the fans on Merseyside.

However, the 40-year-old has now shared some of his less favoured memories after returning to Goodison Park as a Manchester United player.

Wayne Rooney hurt by what some Everton fans did to him

In recent weeks, Rooney has waxed lyrical about Everton’s Jordan Pickford as the former striker takes his chance in the world of punditry.

This has also allowed him with a platform to look back on his own career, where he made that infamous move from Everton to Man United.

Speaking on The Overlap, Rooney admitted the reception he got upon his return to Goodison as a United player did hurt him.

“Yeah, I think obviously me going to Man United is a bit different as well, being a Scouser. But yeah, and when I went back to Goodison, the fans booed me and whatever, and you’ve got to get on with it. Does it hurt? Yeah, it hurts,” said the 40-year-old.

“It’s the club I love. It’s the club my whole family is supporting.

“So it hurts from that point of view. But at the end of the day, listen, it’s football, and I think players move on, players stay. And in time, I’m sure, when Trent comes back, in time the fans will remember what he’s done and how successful he’s been at the club.”

Rooney has praised the Goodison Park atmosphere in the past, with the Old Lady proving a hostile away ground for the United players to travel to.

Everton fans will be hoping to create the same atmosphere on the docks, and Saturday’s volume levels will certainly have matched what was produced in L4.

Wayne Rooney’s record against Everton

For a striker who proved as prolific as Rooney did during his time with the Red Devils, his personal record against the Blues is not that impressive.

Despite Rooney’s comments on how hostile Everton fans made Goodison, he actually fared better on Merseyside when facing the Blues.

Rooney’s first Premier League goal is his favourite Everton memory, but he did not enjoy too many against the Blues.

Considering the forward netted 15 goals against the likes of Newcastle United and 15 goals against Arsenal, keeping him to just five was good going by Everton.
