Liverpool have one key star who is being monitored by Premier League rivals Manchester City and Champions League foes Real Madrid

Real Madrid and Manchester City are keeping an eye on Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai with the Reds reportedly concerned over the player’s contract situation at Anfield.

The Hungarian international has arguably been the Reds’ best player this campaign, with the 25-year-old now in his third season at Anfield. He joined Liverpool from RB Leipzig in 2023 and has been a consistent part of the club’s midfield since.

This campaign he has been used at right-back on occasion as he has shown his versatility and reliability. It should then come as no surprise that other clubs in Europe are keeping tabs on his situation at Anfield.

Man City and Real Madrid monitoring Dominik Szoboszlai

According to AS in Spain, Madrid and City are ‘closely monitoring’ Szoboszlai. They report Liverpool are concerned about the midfielder’s long-term future. He is said to be on 130,000 euros a week with Liverpool.

It is a salary described as ‘negligible’ by AS - who point out that within the Premier League both Bernardo Silva of Man City and Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes are on around £300,000 per week.

There is an argument that Szoboszlai is worth more than both of those players. With that in mind, the report adds: “Liverpool are interested in renewing his contract long-term - until 2030 - and rewarding his excellent performance with a pay raise.”

Speaking about the player’s form this season, journalist Melissa Reddy said: “When Liverpool have been good, Dominik Szoboszlai is the golden thread. When they’re bad, he still is a cut above; trying everything, covering everywhere. Special player, special attitude.”

Stephen Warnock heaps praise on Dominik Szoboszlai

Speaking after Liverpool beat Real Madrid last week, former Reds defender Stephen Warnock said: "Over recent weeks it has been a bit too easy to get at Liverpool's defence through their midfield, but it's almost as if they've had a meeting and the defenders have told the midfielders that they need to be protected more.

"Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch weren't great at the start of this season, but they have been really impressive in the past two games. They have to continue that form now.

"It's imperative you have those two on the pitch but when you add in Dominik Szoboszlai, wow! The energy he has, the recovery challenges he makes and the way he gets to the edge of the penalty area is so impressive.

"There was talk about Florian Wirtz taking his place but he has said: 'Absolutely not, you're not having my place'."
