After the Cleveland Browns lost to one of the worst teams in the NFL, the New York Jets, 27-20 in Week 10, a lot of the spotlight turns to what the team has planned for rookie quarterback Dillon Gabriel.
Gabriel wasn’t horrible against the Jets, but he also made some mistakes in key moments. He ultimately finished the game just 17-32 for 167 yards and two touchdowns.
It has been evident over the past few years that the Browns have struggled to find a suitable quarterback, a problem the organization will eventually have to address.
With rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders being ready to start, some view him as the guy who can turn things around.
However, after the Jets game, Stefanski said that he’d stick with Gabriel and that he just needs to continue improving.
When asked a similar question on Monday, it didn’t sound like he had any thoughts on starting Sanders in the future, almost being non-committal to even consider starting him.
"I don't think it's fair to speculate. We are committed to getting better as an offense. Dillon is committed to improving in any which way he can," Stefanski told reporters. "All of our players, young players, are developing and working behind the scenes to make sure they are better on a daily basis."
There’s obviously a lot that happens in practice that not everybody sees, so it’s possible that Sanders is struggling mightily in practice and isn’t ready to start.
However, given how poorly Gabriel has played in his first season in the NFL, and the Browns not being anywhere near a playoff spot, it might not be the worst idea to give another player a chance.
Sanders should be the next in line, so it’ll be interesting to see what happens moving forward.
