Liverpool have a handful of players who are out of contract next summer but one agreement could now be close

Liverpool are continuing to hold talks with defender Ibrahima Konate over a new contract at the club and one report has claimed a new offer has now been made by the Reds.

The Frenchman is out of contract this summer and has been the subject of interest from Real Madrid while Bayern Munich have also been linked. Some reports have previously claimed that Premier League rivals Manchester City, Arsenal and Chelsea were all keeping tabs on the situation with the defender at Anfield.

Ibrahima Konate Liverpool contract latest as major twist reported

Speaking to Give Me Sport, Fabrizio Romano gave an update on the contract situation with Konate. He said when asked if the defender had made a decision: “Not yet, there are talks ongoing but still no decision made on player side. Liverpool are waiting."

A few hours later, reports in France from L’Equipe claimed that Liverpool had officially made a new offer to Konate within the last few days. The outlet claimed the Anfield club were “privately confident about the outcome of the discussions.”

However, with Romano reporting a decision has not yet been made and with reports in France indicating Liverpool are confident of an agreement - there remains hope that Konate could be tied down.

The defender has not been at his best this season and Liverpool are still expected to strengthen at centre-back either in January or in the summer. Marc Guehi remains very much on the club’s radar but Alessandro Bastoni of Inter Milan has also been linked.

Jamie Carragher speaks about Ibrahima Konate form

Speaking about Konate’s form this season and his contract situation, Reds legend Jamie Carragher told the Daily Mail: “I’d like him to stay but if he doesn’t stay, Liverpool will sign someone else. Liverpool won’t fall apart if Konate leaves.

“He's not Virgil van Dijk. He's a good centre-back who you hope will sign, but if he doesn’t want to sign, Liverpool will be absolutely fine.

“He's a very good centre-back, he's a title winner at Liverpool, he's played in the Champions League final against Real Madrid. He's obviously a quality centre-back. It's not poor management [if he goes for free]. You can't physically make somebody sign a contract. Then it's your decision, do you keep him to the length of his contract or do you sell him?”

He added: “He hasn't had a great start to the season and he needs to show a bit more consistency.

“He was fantastic against Real Madrid and he needs to keep that going over the next few months, it can't just be two games on the bounce.

“There’s no secrets [to picking up your form]. It’s about working harder and you become more professional. It’s on your mind constantly that you want to get back into good form and every you think tiny detail will make a difference, whether that’s what you eat, what time you go to sleep, it’s just becoming an ultra-professional on and off the pitch.”
