Washington Commanders defensive tackle Daron Payne will miss Sunday’s game against the Miami Dolphins after having a one-game suspension imposed by the NFL upheld upon appeal.
The NFL suspended the former Shades Valley High School and Alabama standout for one game after he was disqualified from further participation during a 44-22 loss to the Detroit Lions on Sunday.
Payne appealed that punishment to a hearing officer appointed and compensated by the NFL and the NFL Players Association. Former Pittsburgh Steelers guard Ramon Foster heard Payne’s appeal and upheld the one-game suspension, the league announced.
Officials ejected Payne from the field after he punched Lions wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown. The incident occurred after former Alabama running back Jahmyr Gibbs scored on a 13-yard run to give Detroit a 20-3 lead with 9:41 remaining in the first half.
Payne slugged St. Brown, who was still wearing his helmet when he said something to the defensive tackle after the touchdown.

The NFL suspended Payne for breaking Rule 12, Section 3, Article 1, which applies to “any act which is contrary to the generally understood principles of sportsmanship,” including “throwing a punch, or a forearm,” and Rule 12, Section 2, Article 14(d), which prohibits “striking, swinging at, or clubbing the head or neck of an opponent with the wrist(s), arm(s), elbow(s), or hand(s).”
Payne will miss his paycheck for Washington’s meeting with the Dolphins on Sunday in Madrid, Spain. He will be eligible to return to the Commanders’ 53-player active roster the next day. Payne won’t play again until Nov. 30, when Washington returns from its bye week to face the Denver Broncos.
