Newcastle United star Nick Woltemade was honoured by the German FA on Monday with their ‘Fair Play Medal’.
[Sky Germany explain the situation](https://sport.sky.de/fussball/artikel/amp/auszeichnung-fuer-nick-woltemade-dfb-star-erhaelt-fair-play-medaille/13468095/34942), reporting that the Newcastle forward was awarded for his ‘exemplary conduct’ while with VfB Stuttgart last season.
He won the DFB Cup with them, beating Arminia Bielefeld in the final. In the celebrations after that victory, he ‘encouraged’ the Arminia players rather than celebrating with his teammates.
Woltemade explained at the time that he wanted to congratulate the then third-division club on their “phenomenal season”.
_“I think that’s the right thing to do. And I still have plenty of time to celebrate with the fans, my family, and my team,”_ he said at the time.
This was seen as a ‘sign of true sportsmanship’ according to the DFB, who have now handed him their Fair Play Award. The 23-year-old Newcastle United striker was honoured on Monday during Germany’s public training session in Wolfsburg.
DFB Vice President Ronny Zimmermann, chairman of the Fair Play jury, was keen to praise the Newcastle star for his actions.
_“In a moment of triumph, Nick Woltemade put his teammates and opponents first, not himself,”_ he said. _“It is gestures like these that distinguish our sport and make it more than just a game.”_
It’s another big moment for Woltemade, who has been on the up and up over the last year. First, he was starring for Stuttgart, then he got his big move to Newcastle. He’s already making a big impression at St James Park as well. Now he can add this award to his list of achievements.
