England and Chelsea star Raheem Sterling has described being the target of a shocking break-in as the "ultimate violation of privacy and safety". The winger was at home with his children when it was targeted by masked thugs.

Sterling and his family escaped unharmed from the incident, which occurred at 7pm on Saturday. The perpetrators failed to get away with any valuables after being surprised to find Sterling was home. A police report has since been filed.

In a statement, a spokesperson for Sterling told The Athletic: "We can confirm that Raheem Sterling was the victim of a home break-in this weekend. We can also confirm that he and his children were present at home at the time.

"Whilst the ultimate violation of privacy and safety, we are thankful to be able to confirm that he and his loved ones are all safe. We ask that the privacy of Raheem and his loved ones be respected at this challenging time."

Thames Valley Police confirmed that it has launched a 'thorough investigation' into the break-in. In a statement, the force said: “Officers are conducting a thorough investigation and ask anyone with information, or if they saw anyone in the area acting suspiciously, to contact police.”

It is the second time Sterling has been targeted. The ex-Manchester City star's Surrey home was hit during the 2022 World Cup, when he was on international duty. A man was subsequently charged with 33 offences of conspiracy to commit burglary.

While Sterling had to fly home from Qatar on that occasion, the 30-year-old has been outside of Chelsea's squad all of this season. That meant on Saturday, he was at home rather than warming up for the Blues' clash against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Sterling could not find a suitable move in the summer after spending last term on loan at Arsenal. The attacker has recorded 19 goals and 15 assists in 81 appearances since joining the Blues as the most significant signing of the first summer of Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital's ownership of the club.

The four-time Premier League champion last played a competitive match for Chelsea in May 2024. Sterling trains away from the first team squad.

Some Premier League stars are said to have beefed up their security by employing former MMA fighters due to the number of incidents in recent years. A security consultant speaking to The Mail said: “I can tell you that one massive club with several players in the Cheshire area has boosted security. They have now drafted in a couple of former MMA fighters to bodyguard the players and their families.

“One of the lads does the close protection work while the other is a house sitter. That means he stay in the house when the player is away with the club.

“The gangs tend to pull the big jobs when the players are away in Europe. Both the former MMA fighters are very confident when it comes to physical confrontations and would not back off if something happened.

“They look after the players and their families when they are out on the street when things can happen. If a young players wants to go to nightclub they will take them and make sure nothing happens. These lads have fought at the highest levels and are highly capable.”
