It took longer than it probably should have, but the Mavericks finally decided to kick Nico Harrison to the curb after the GM who orchestrated the trade that sent Luka Doncic to the Lakers became the most hated man in Dallas. Plenty of fans rejoiced after hearing he’d been fired, and Cooper Flagg’s mom made it very clear she’s not sad to see him go.
At this point, I think every NBA fan is familiar with the drama that’s surrounded the Mavericks since Luka Doncic was shipped off to Los Angeles last season in one of the most shocking trades in the history of the league.
That transaction was overseen by Nico Harrison, the GM who had to know he was going to be subjected to a tsunami of backlash after willingly parting ways with the face of the franchise.
He didn’t do himself any favors by channeling his inner James Dolan and having security keep an eye out for the many, many fans who called for his dismissal while attending games at the American Airlines Center, the venue where “FIRE NICO” chants became as ubiquitous as “DEFENSE” and “LET’S GO MAVS” since the fateful trade went down in Februrary.
It took around nine months, but Harrison’s haters saw their prayers answered when he was fired on Tuesday, and Cooper Flagg’s mom was one of the many people who hopped online to celebrate his dismissal.

The Mavericks only had a 1.8% chance to secure the first overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, but they defied the odds while earning the right to scoop up Cooper Flagg out of Duke.
Both of Flagg’s parents played basketball in college; his dad settled for a junior program, while his mom, Kelly, was the captain of the women’s team at the University of Maine. She’s gotten a front-row seat to his meteoric rise, and she’s very familiar with what the mood has been like at home games since her son kicked off his rookie year.
On Monday night, the Mavericks dropped to 3-8 on the season during a game where the crowd in Dallas busted out a “FIRE NICO” chant while P.J. Washington was attempting some crucial free throws in the closing seconds of what ended up being a 116-114 loss to the Bucks.

That became a fairly hot topic of conversation after the loss, and Kelly cosigned a fan who urged the Mavericks to part ways with Harrison for serving as a distraction by retweeting that message shortly after news of his firing broke.
She didn’t stop there, as she replied to a few fans who took a similar stance while implicitly celebrating Harrison’s departure.
The Mavericks will officially usher in a new era when they face off against the Suns on Wednesday night.
