Preview: Bayern Munich v Arsenal Women

We’re back in UEFA Women’s Champions League action at Allianz Arena to take on Bayern Munich at 5.45pm (UK time) on Wednesday.

Our European title defence began with a 2-1 defeat at home to Lyon, before we got out first three points on the board with a 2-0 win against Benfica in Lisbon.

Those results left us tenth in the table, while Bayern are eighth having lost 7-1 to Barcelona and beaten Juventus 2-1.

FLYING HIGH

It’s been an almost perfect start to the season in the Frauen-Bundesliga for Bayern, who have won nine and drawn one of their opening ten matches, making them the only team unbeaten in the division as they sit six points clear of second-placed Wolfsburg.

That’s largely down to a stubborn defence that has conceded just three goals, eight fewer than the next best defence in the league, making the 7-1 defeat to Barcelona all the more surprising.

The trend continued with two big wins last week - 6-0 away to Nurnberg on Tuesday and 4-0 at home to Union Berlin on Friday.

WHAT THE MANAGERS SAY

Slegers: “It's less than a year ago we played against them. They still have some players that are similar with their qualities. I think they still pose the same threat from set-pieces, for example, and how they create. They're a really good team. They rotate and they try to create problems for the opposition.

"So I have very high respect for Bayern because we know the last two games we played against them were very tight. So I look forward to the game. We look forward to the challenge. I think it's two really good teams going against each other tomorrow."  - every word from Renée’s pre-Bayern press conference.

Jose Barcala: “We are trying to go game by game, showing our strengths, trying to be the team we want to be.

“What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. It’s good to get some learnings, understanding that this game against Arsenal will be a really different scenario [to the Barcelona defeat]. We will make a different game. We need to understand that we need to be brave, we need to try and dominate the opponent and understand that losing the ball is part of the game.”

FACTS AND STATS

We have met Bayern four times previously in the Champions League, with all four games being won by the home side on the day.

Bayern have won each of their four home games against English clubs in the Champions League (2 v us, 2 v Chelsea), the only nation they’ve hosted more than twice and boast a 100% win rate against.

Bayern remain unbeaten at home in the group stage of the Champions League (W10 D3), no side has hosted more group games without losing at least once (level with Barcelona and Chelsea).

We have won four of our last five Champions League away games (L1), including our last two in a row, and are aiming to win three consecutive matches on the road for the first time in the competition; however, our only defeat in our last seven away group stage matches did come against Bayern (W5 D1).

Daphne van Domselaar has saved 11 of the 13 shots on target that we have faced in the Champions League this season, making her the only goalkeeper with a save percentage above 75% in the competition (85%, min.10 shots on target faced).

LAST TIME WE MET

Bayern were beaten on our way to last season’s Champions League success, as we won 3-2 at Meadow Park in the group stage thanks to a Glodis Perla Viggosdottir own goal as well as strikes from Alessia Russo and Mariona Caldentey, meaning Magdalena Eriksson’s brace was in vain.
