Remember when James Rodriguez joined Everton and blew everyone’s mind for a brief time? Well, the Colombian is looking for another adventure soon as his time in Mexico is coming to an end.
In a glittering career that has seen him play for Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, Porto, Monaco, and of course, Everton, James Rodriguez has achieved pretty much everything he could have dreamed.
His time in the Premier League was short but sweet, with Rodriguez registering six goals and nine assists in 26 games back in 2020/21.
Most fans would have liked to have seen more of Rodriguez on Merseyside, but he moved on after just one season. And now, he’s looking for another new club.

What’s happening to James Rodriguez?
Rodriguez ended up at Mexican side Leon in January of this year, after spending time at Rayo Vallecano in Spain from August of 2024.
After leaving Everton for Al-Rayyan, Rodriguez turned out for Olympiacos and Sao Paulo, and Fabrizio Romano says he’s now on the lookout for another new club.
Romano tweeted: “James Rodriguez will leave Leon and he’s available as free agent again for 2026. Ready for new chapter after playing in Mexico… ahead of the World Cup with Colombia.”
It is unclear where Rodriguez will end up next, but it is thought he might be tempted by an offer to play in the MLS.

Everton should not consider re-signing Rodriguez
Less than a year ago, it was teased that Rodriguez could return to Everton. To be fair, it seems like every time he’s looking for a new club, Everton are mentioned.
In the past, it may have been a good idea to take a gamble on the ageing Colombian playmaker, but that time has passed.
At 34-years-old, Rodriguez has now lost some of his pace and agility, and while he still has skills, his fitness levels are just as spotty as they were previously. He’s never been able to shake injuries, and Everton cannot take a risk on that now.
As much as we’d love to see Rodriguez back on Merseyside, signing him just wouldn’t make sense anymore.
