Thomas Frank keen to strengthen this first XI spot in January; top-class player eyed

Thomas Frank is demanding the Tottenham board to sign a top-quality winger in the January transfer window

Tottenham Hotspur have done well in the opening months of the new season under Thomas Frank. The Lilywhites find themselves just a point outside of the Premier League top-four, having lost only two of their first 11 matches.

However, despite the positive performances, there are still some key areas that need to be addressed if Spurs are to build on their momentum and compete on the remaining three competitions this campaign.

The lack of creativity and goals are troubling Thomas Frank’s side. Richarlison has blown more cold than hot, while Dominic Solanke continues to be sidelined following an ankle surgery that has limited him to just two appearances this season. Randal Kolo Muani is also facing a spell on the sidelines now following a jaw fracture sustained against Manchester United at the weekend.

In terms of creativity, Tottenham have been fully dependant on Mohammed Kudus. Fellow summer signing Xavi Simons has barely done anything to ease the creativity burden off Kudus’ shoulders, while wide players such as Mathys Tel, Wilson Odobert and Brennan Johnson have largely struggled to put in consistent performances.

Real Madrid star Rodrygo is on the radar of Tottenham

Thomas Frank eyeing top-class winger in January

According to Football Insider transfer correspondent Pete O’Rourke, Thomas Frank wants to sign a top-class winger. Signing a wide player was one of the priorities during the summer transfer window, but they failed to land one before the window slammed shut.

Tottenham lost iconic figure Son Heung-min to Los Angeles FC in August, and his void has come back to bite Frank’s side. The Lilywhites have lacked invention and dynamism largely from left flank to supplement attacks from the opposite wing. As a result, they remain desperate to bolster the wide department, with two names in the shortlist.

The report adds Real Madrid’s Rodrygo and Iliman Ndiaye of Everton are two options on Tottenham’s radar. Spurs failed to complete a deal for Rodrygo in the summer but still remain interested. Ndiaye is another player who the club are looking at following his impressive performances in an Everton shirt. Given his impact and growing importance, the Toffees will be reluctant to let the Senegalese international leave midway through the campaign.

Everton’s Iliman Ndiaye has been linked with a move to Tottenham

Both Rodrygo and Ndiaye have attracted Tottenham’s attention, but signing the former appears to be feasible. This is because Rodrygo has struggled for game time at Real Madrid this season, with boss Xabi Alonso preferring Vinicius Jr., Arda Guler and Jude Bellingham ahead of him in attacking areas of the pitch. If the situation doesn’t change, there is a big possibility the 24-year-old pushes for an exit in January. And that could work in Tottenham’s favour, although several clubs are interested in the Brazilian international.

When it comes to Ndiaye, the capital-based club could find it tough to convince Everton into selling one of their most important players. The Royal Blues have no urgency to sell the 25-year-old as he has a long-term contract, meaning Spurs will need to pay a premium to bring him in.

That said, it will be interesting to see whether Frank manages to land a top-quality winger as the supply of coveted commodities are usually rare in January.
