One Liverpool player is reportedly close to agreeing his exit from the club with his contract ticking down
Liverpool defender Andy Robertson is close to finalising an agreement to join Celtic on a free transfer next summer, according to a report.
The Reds vice-captain is out of contract in the summer and is free to agree a pre-contract with clubs outside of England from January. Scottish champions Celtic are now strongly linked as they look to secure a deal for Robertson.
The Scotland international hails from Glasgow and started his career in the Celtic academy. He never made a professional appearance for the 55-time champions of Scotland, leaving them for Queen’s Park. He joined Dundee United in 2013 before moving to England with Hull City in 2014.
He has been at Anfield since 2017 after joining Liverpool for £8m in what has proven to be one of the club’s best bits of transfer business in the modern era. He has made 354 appearances for the Reds, with 12 goals and a staggering 68 assists. He has won two Premier League titles and a Champions League with the club.
Celtic ‘finalising agreement’ to sign Andy Robertson
According to Fichajes, Robertson has been in talks with Celtic about a possible return. A deal “ is almost finalized as a free transfer this summer, with a pre-contract possible as early as January. The scenario appeals to both the player and the club.”
Celtic have had a rocky start to the 2025-26 campaign with former Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers resigning as manager amid a public fallout with the club’s board. Signing Robertson on a free transfer could go a long way to appeasing the club’s fans who have also expressed discontent with transfer business in recent windows.
TeamTALK reported last week that Robertson would be open to a pre-contract agreement with Celtic, with the possibility appearing to have become more likely in recent days.
Arne Slot praises Andy Robertson
Speaking ahead of Liverpool’s 3-0 to Man City, Slot said of Robertson: “He’s (Robertson) done really well in the last three games because he has played three games in seven days, though I took him off against (Crystal) Palace after 60-65 minutes.
“I was very pleased to see he could play almost 90 in his last game because it’s hard for players to play three games in seven days. Eight days or nine days is already a big difference compared to seven days.
“But he’s done well, as the team did. It’s so helpful for every individual if the team plays at its best, and I think that’s what we did in the last two games.
“He’s been calm on the ball and done a job defensively. So happy with his two, maybe three performances, though Palace, 3-0 loss, wasn’t the best game of the season.”
Slot continued: “Over 30 doesn’t tell me anything. If I look at Virgil, Mo and Robbo, who was last season also above 30, and all three of them were able to win the Premier League and all three of them played a big part in it.
“If a 24-year-old doesn’t play as well, nobody talks about his age. If a 32, 33, 34-year-old has one or two bad games, people start talking about age. That is how things work in this industry. But I think 32, I wouldn’t say that that is old for a football player in my opinion.”
