The Green Bay Packers offense the last two games has been as ugly as it gets, combining for 20 points in back-to-back home losses. Monday’s performance versus the Eagles was a very different kind of failure than in the Week 9 defeat to Carolina. Against the Panthers, Green Bay advanced to the red zone five different times, coming away with just one touchdown and 13 points.
Against the Eagles, they just couldn’t get anything going. The Packers mustered one drive all game of more than 40 yards. The play by play reads like a horror story script – or a soporific, for those who enjoy offense.
Their five first-half possessions: punt, punt, punt, punt, fumble.
And in the second half: downs, punt, touchdown, fumble, missed field goal.
Yikes and yikes.

By the time Packers coach Matt LaFleur met with the media postgame, many outraged fans were calling for his job. He didn’t shy away from the ugly offensive showing, or, later, from questions about his job security, but his address could also be perceived as tone-deaf by fans who have had it with the weekly inconsistency.
They don’t want to hear about effort. The defense is obviously good. What Packers faithful want to know is when this offense is going to turn things around. Barring that, it would at least be nice for the head coach to match the general sense of frustration with how this team has played since, really, the first two weeks of the season.
Talking up the defense is growing old while offense flounders
“Well, unfortunately there’s absolutely no moral victories in our sport, but I was proud of our guys’ effort,” LaFleur began. “I thought they battled for four quarters … I thought our defense was outstanding. And unfortunately just too many mistakes offensively to overcome it.”
Unfortunately. In their three losses to this season, the Packers have scored 30 points. At this point, battling isn’t enough. You don’t get an excuse for playing the Eagles tough coming off a loss to the Panthers. In case anyone thought the Panthers were any good, they just lost at home to a 2-8 Saints team with a rookie quarterback starting his second game.

“I’ve said this many times,” LaFleur continued, “you hold good teams to 10 points you should win the football game.” No disagreement there. Why can’t the offense seem to get it together? No one should expect a head coach to publicly eviscerate his team, but such a bland response coming off consecutive anemic weeks won’t foster support in the fanbase.
A road game against the Giants in Week 11 is all but a must-win heading into a second half of schedule heavy on divisional matchups.
“We’ve got a short week, can’t feel sorry for ourselves. Gotta figure it out, come back and be better,” LaFleur went out on a limb to say.

Lined as 7.5-point favorites, the Packers have yet to cover the spread when favored by more than 3.5 points this season (0-5).
