Lions add veteran tight end to practice squad, release offensive lineman

The Detroit Lions made a pair of roster moves on Tuesday as they prepare for their Week 11 matchup with the Philadelphia Eagles.

On their social media account, the Lions announced that they have released offensive lineman Jack Conley from the practice squad, while also sharing that they have signed tight end Anthony Firkser to the unit, utilizing the available space.

A week ago, the Lions added Conley and several additional offensive linemen – Chris Hubbard and Netane Muti – to the unit to help carry some of the load in practice due to a series of injuries to the unit.

Christian Mahogany suffered a lower leg injury during their Week 9 loss to the Minnesota Vikings, along with Taylor Decker (knee) and Penei Sewell, who were dealing with injuries throughout the week, limiting their participation at points during their Week 10 preparation.

Conley, who joined the New England Patriots as an undrafted free agent earlier this year, was a three-year starter (2022-24) at Boston College and a college teammate of injured Lions guard Christian Mahogany.

Firkser, who had played for six different franchises throughout his eight-year NFL career, returns to the Lions for a second stint. While he didn’t register any stats on offense, Firkser played two games in Detroit in 2023. He played two snaps on offense and 22 snaps on special teams.

The Harvard graduate signed with the New York Jets as an undrafted free agent in 2017 after no team selected him in that year’s NFL draft. From there, Firkser would go on to have stints with the Kansas City Chiefs, Tennessee Titans, Atlanta Falcons, New England Patriots, and Lions. Of the six teams he’s played for, Firkser Jets, Chiefs, and now the Lions are three teams he’s signed with twice.

Firkser’s most productive time in the NFL was the four seasons he played with the Titans. In Tennessee, he caught 115 passes for 1,207 yards and three touchdowns.
