On Monday, it was reported that New York Jets wide receiver Garrett Wilson would miss three to four weeks after re-aggravating his knee injury during a win over the Cleveland Browns on Sunday.
Wilson missed two games with the knee issue but then returned this past weekend, and at the time, it seemed like the 25-year-old was ahead of schedule. That’s what made the report that he would now be sidelined again that much more frustrating.
But then, frustrated Jets head coach Aaron Glenn bristled with the media on Tuesday, questioning ESPN’s Rich Cimini (who was not present at the time) for putting out the report before Glenn got the chance to talk about it. Glenn then told reporters to “ask Rich” about the situation.
So is Wilson out or not?
The star pass-catcher spoke to reporters himself, and he dropped a rather weird update, first saying “I’ll be fine” and then telling media members to “ask coach” concerning the initial report of Wilson being out for several weeks, via Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic.
Not surprisingly, Jets fans were very noisy after Wilson’s remarks.
Something very weird is obviously going on here, but it would not be the least bit surprising if Wilson is actually hurt. He went without a catch on just three targets against the Browns, so it stands to reason that he was not 100 percent.
While New York has won two games in a row, the Jets are just 2-7 on the year. They are not contending for a playoff spot, and at the risk of suggesting New York should tank, the Jets wouldn’t be doing themselves any favors by winning extra games this season and thus further sabotaging their draft position.
Taking that into consideration, it would be wise to keep Wilson out of action if he is not fully healthy. New York signed the former first-round pick to a four-year, $130 million contract extension during the offseason, so the Jets need to protect their investment.
There also stands a good chance that New York will select a quarterback in the first round of the NFL Draft in April. Keeping Wilson healthy will obviously be paramount to a rookie’s success in 2026. It would be silly for the Jets to risk further injury.
At this point, it’s hard to determine exactly what is going on when it comes to Wilson.
What we do know is that the Jets will be facing the New England Patriots on Thursday night.
