Nine months after the worst trade in NBA history, ‘Fire Nico’ becomes a reality

Dallas Mavericks fans got their revenge.

They held public rallies, they booed and made signs to express their displeasure at games, and they refused to rationalize or move past perhaps the most inexplicable trade in NBA history. They continued to cheer for Luka Doncic and chanted “Fire Nico!” at the executive who shipped the franchise icon to the Los Angeles Lakers without warning. After a long summer to think things through and some unexpected good luck to potentially ease their anger and heartache, many Mavericks fans returned this season with the same disgust. Others simply disappeared, leaving empty seats and unrealized revenue in their wake.
