Pittsburgh Steelers offload rangy former Commanders free safety

The Pittsburgh Steelers have released safety Darrick Forrest from the practice squad to make room for Asante Samuel Jr., the team announced on Tuesday.

Forrest had been with the team for two weeks as injuries racked up in the safety room, but the team is now starting to get healthier there.

Forrest, 26, is a rangy free safety that also brings special teams value in his game.

He was with the Buffalo Bills and Indianapolis Colts at different points this season but has failed to stick on either roster. Forrest was with the Bills for most of training camp before being released.

He is an experienced safety, too. A fifth-round pick out of Cincinnati in the 2021 NFL Draft, Forrest has started 17 games over his NFL career, with 59 total games played. For most of those games, he has played as a free safety.

Forrest checks in at 5-foot-11, 206 pounds and ran a 4.42 40-yard dash with a 39-inch vertical coming out of college, showcasing just how explosive Forrest can be as an athlete.

However, with Jabrill Peppers on the mend and the addition of Sebastian Castro, the Steelers feel comfortable with their depth and plan at safety moving forward in a room that has consolidated together over the last few weeks.
