MN Vikings Land New Cornerback

The Minnesota Vikings cornerback depth is a bit stretched with Jeff Okudah on injured reserve after suffering a second concussion this season. Kwesi Adofo-Mensah signed veteran Fabian Moreau to the active roster, but the team willingly went into the year thin at the position.

Moreau had been a member of the practice squad, so his addition to the 53-man roster removes a depth option. Needing to prepare for the potential that another elevation is needed, and after missing out on Asante Samuel Jr., Shemar Bartholomew was signed on Tuesday.

When the season started it was Fabian Moreau that Minnesota held onto by using a practice squad spot. After he joined the active roster, the practice squad options were down to just Zemaiah Vaughn and Tyrek Funderburk. That changed on Tuesday.

Undrafted out of Georgia Southern, Bartholomew signed with the Carolina Panthers after being released by the New York Jets. He appeared in five games and recorded three tackles. The Panthers used Bartholomew for just 17 defensive snaps and another 34 on special teams.

It’s clear that the Vikings believe cornerback is a position of need having hosted Asante Samuel Jr. for a visit last week. The former second round pick is a veteran with 50 games under his belt. After being cleared from injury, he is ready to go. Rather than join Minnesota though, Samuel signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Minnesota hosts the Chicago Bears on Sunday at U.S. Bank Stadium. They are three point favorites after beating them in Week 1. They’ll then turn their focus to Matt LaFleur’s Green Bay Packers. At 4-5, Kevin O’Connell’s team can’t afford to keep failing to capitalize on opportunities.
