Eagles face unexpected setback as Jaire Alexander contemplates retirement just weeks after trade

The Philadelphia Eagles took down the Green Bay Packers with a few new faces making their mark. Brandon Graham, Jaelan Phillips, and Michael Carter II all stepped up in the win. However, one player was notably absent from the trip to Green Bay, cornerback Jaire Alexander.

The former Packer, acquired from the Ravens at the trade deadline, didn’t suit up. The team cited injury issues, but as recent reports suggest, there’s a bigger story unfolding.

According to The Athletic’s Dianna Russini, Alexander is stepping away from the NFL entirely and considering retirement at just 28 years old.

“I’m told Jaire is contemplating retirement but for now is stepping away to think through his next steps. Sources tell me and Mike Silver the Eagles have kept conversations private over the last few days,” Russini wrote on X.

Philadelphia believed they had found their missing piece when they traded for Alexander on Nov. 1. The plan was simple: pair him with rookie Quinyon Mitchell and finally balance out the secondary.

To get him, the Eagles sent a 2026 sixth-round pick to Baltimore in exchange for Alexander and a 2027 seventh-rounder. It looked promising on paper. But now there’s a legitimate chance Alexander never plays a down in midnight green.

His injury history has been well-documented. After battling knee problems for years, Green Bay released him this offseason. Baltimore picked him up on a one-year deal worth $4 million with another $2 million in incentives. This season, Alexander appeared in just two games for the Ravens, logging only 61 defensive snaps as part of their cornerback rotation.

Before joining Baltimore, Alexander spent six seasons with the Packers. He suited up for 78 games and started 76 of them, earning All-Pro and Pro Bowl honors in both 2020 and 2022.
