Giannis Antetokounmpo, Bucks overcome Cooper Flagg’s career night

The visiting Milwaukee Bucks rallied from a 13-point fourth-quarter deficit and contained a career-best performance from Mavericks rookie Cooper Flagg to shock Dallas 116-114 on Monday. With 1.2 seconds left, P.J. Washington had a chance to tie or win, but Giannis Antetokounmpo’s foul on his long three-point attempt set up free throws. Washington made the first, missed the second, and intentionally missed the third, but the ball bounced away from the crowded paint.

Flagg poured in a career-high 26 points for Dallas and shone in the final minutes. The Mavericks held a 92-79 lead with 10:35 remaining and seemed in control, but the Bucks mounted a comeback fueled by Antetokounmpo, who finished with 30 points, eight rebounds, and 6 assists, and Kyle Kuzma, who added 26 points.

Milwaukee led 108-102 with five minutes remaining, but Dallas narrowed the gap to one with just over two minutes left before Flagg took control. He capped a 7-0 run with a driving basket to give the Mavericks a 109-108 advantage. Flagg followed with two free throws and another layup, attacking Antetokounmpo directly to push Dallas ahead 113-112 with 28.7 seconds on the clock. The Bucks answered as Ryan Rollins drove to the rim for a basket while Dallas’s defense swarmed Antetokounmpo with 17.9 seconds remaining.

Dallas called its final timeout and set up at halfcourt. Washington inbounded to Flagg, who slipped while driving after some contact with Kuzma. Kuzma intercepted the pass and powered in a dunk to push Milwaukee ahead 116-113.

The Mavericks raced down the court and found Max Christie for an open three, but it rattled out. Washington grabbed the rebound and was fouled. Antetokounmpo signaled for a review, but the Bucks had no challenges left. He had gone scoreless in the first quarter, with Dallas holding a 31-27 lead after 12 minutes.

Antetokounmpo, typically playing at an MVP pace, found it tough to get going early in this matchup. Through three quarters, he had only 15 points and four turnovers, with Dallas doing a strong job of swarming him on drives and disrupting his passing options. Early foul trouble in the first half further hampered his effectiveness.
