Opinion: David Moyes’ latest comments on Tyler Dibling show sensible plan for £40m Everton…

Everton are taking a slow and steady approach with Tyler Dibling after his summer move from Southampton.

Everton wanted to bring in a new right-sided winger over the summer.

Real Sociedad’s Takefusa Kubo was one Toffees target, while Lyon’s Malick Fofana snubbed a move to Everton.

Everton ended up signing Tyler Dibling for up to £40million, taking a chance on the teenager after he had shown promise at Southampton.

Dibling was a rare shining light in a relegated Saints side, but his Everton career has yet to take off.

Dibling has played just 63 minutes of Premier League action and hasn’t featured in the last three outings.

Dibling’s lack of action has been confusing, especially as he has even been snubbed as a substitute.

David Moyes has now opened up on Dibling, telling the Liverpool Echo that the 19-year-old is ‘quiet’ and will take some time to come out of his shell.

Moyes feels that it isn’t easy for new signings to make an instant impact, and Dibling needs patience, especially at such a young age.

Moyes even claims that people aren’t talking about Iliman Ndiaye’s upcoming Africa Cup of Nations duty, which could open up a chance for Dibling to shine.

The plan for now is for Dibling to gradually settle in and then make an impact, possibly once Ndiaye heads on international duty.

“We’re hopefully going to try and get Tyler ready. Nobody’s really talking about how we’re going to lose Ili mid-December, and there’ll be opportunities that arise for players [then] and we’ll see what comes around at that time,” said Moyes.

“When you sign players, it’s not easy for it all to fall into place right away, especially when we are in a world where everything’s expected so quick and to be done so early that things should work.

“I think Kiernan (Dewsbury-Hall) and Jack (Grealish) have both fit in really well, but maybe the Premier League experience, being in the Premier League before, playing in the stadiums etc etc makes it that bit easier… Tyler has got that as well, but obviously from a lower level and a younger age.”

“He is a quiet boy, and it is going to take a bit of time for him to come out of his shell,” he added.

David Moyes is taking a sensible approach with Tyler Dibling

Dibling starting from the bench makes complete sense for a number of reasons.

The teenager is still inexperienced at Premier League level and is still settling in at Everton.

Iliman Ndiaye is also shining on the right wing, so there is no major rush for Dibling to start.

Not bringing Dibling on from the bench is baffling, as he needs Premier League minutes at some point, but Moyes may feel that he also needs a slow and steady approach.

Dibling left Southampton for Chelsea in 2022, but he quickly returned to the Saints, with homesickness cited as the biggest reason by BBC Sport.

Dibling is older and a little more mature now, but Moyes will be well aware of that aspect of the winger’s history.

A patient approach will allow Dibling to really feel at home with Everton, and will hopefully pay dividends in the long term.

More substitute appearances for Dibling are needed, but it’s clear that Moyes won’t just throw him in and will be very careful with his minutes.
