Malick Thiaw completed a move from AC Milan to Newcastle United in August.
The Germany international was linked to the Magpies in the past, including in the summer 2024 window. A move didn’t get off the ground then or the following January. Newcastle United were persistent and got their man in the last market.
His decision to join the Premier League side has paid off as Thiaw has been a regular for Eddie Howe. His performances for Newcastle United saw him return to the Germany squad for the first time since October 2023.
Thiaw is currently part of Julian Naglesmann’s squad, preparing for World Cup qualifiers against Luxembourg and Slovakia. Sky Deutschland have spoken to the 24-year-old, and he discussed his move to the Magpies.
Sky Deutschland explained Eddie Howe tried to get him to Newcastle United on three different occasions. They then asked the Germany international whether that impressed him.
When responding to that, Thiaw said conversations with Howe convinced him to join the English club.
“Definitely. There was already a conversation in the spring, but this summer it became much more concrete than in previous years,” he said.
“I then had talks with Eddie Howe, in which he explained his plans for me and where he saw me playing. After that, I decided to join Newcastle. I think it was the right decision.”

The player says Naglesmann had a chat with him after his move to Newcastle United.
“He called me when I transferred to Newcastle. We had a phone conversation, and the initial expectation was that I would deliver in the games for Newcastle,” Thiaw explained.
“I think I’ve managed that quite well lately. Since I’ve been here, we haven’t had a face-to-face meeting yet, but I’m sure that will happen in the next few days.”
