I asked Newcastle fans the big Eddie Howe question – Results of poll after 2,000 votes

It’s been a strange start to the season on Tyneside, as strong run in our Champions League and Carabao Cup campaigns has been coupled with a pretty awful period in the Premier League.

Sunday’s defeat at Brentford was out third straight loss on the road in the league, leaving us 14th, closer to second bottom than the top 10 and putting the pressure on Eddie Howe to pull us out of this rut in arguably his toughest test in four years at the club.

But, moving beyond some of Sunday’s post-match reactions on social media, what do fans REALLY think regarding the boss’ ability to get us back on track over the coming weeks and months?

In a poll posted on X, I asked: “Will Eddie Howe turn things around at Newcastle after our awful start to the league season?”

The poll received over 2,000 votes, and the three options to vote were:

Yes, I fully back him to turn things around

I’m hopeful, but unsure if he’ll turn things around

No, he won’t turn things around this time

The results? 58.7% voted for option 1, highlighting their continued confidence in Howe, 32.1% went option 2, meaning they were hopeful but unsure, and 9.2%, via option 3, feel this is the rough patch he will not be able to overcome.

So, over 90% signalled some form of hope or confidence that Howe will get us back on track and remains the man to sort out issues, while just over 9% fear this could be the end of the road.

A few comments in response to the poll included:

“I feel like our away form is poor, but are we really that poor overall if you take into account cups and home form? He’s earned some time surely anyway given the past few seasons. I think he’ll turn it round”

“Needed to freshen it up in the summer, bought players in and had no idea what or how to use them, wasted £150m on Prem Proven ****. My opinion is he’s got util the Mackem game.”

“Feel like the flat 433 with the players we’ve brought in over the summer has ran its course and just doesn’t suit us anymore.”

“It’s not just Eddie Howe. The intensity & energy in away games is not there. The players also have to get themselves going. Our midfield 3 away from home have been very poor.”
