Wolves are expected to be busy in January as they aim to build a team that can mount a great escape
Incoming Wolves Rob Edwards has an almighty task on his hands if he’s to keep Wolves status as a Premier League club intact.
There’s many aspects Edwards will need to change if Wolves are to beat the drop. One of the biggest concerns at the moment is the team’s lack of creativity in the final third.
Wolves have scored just seven times in 11 matches so far - the lowest in the division, with last season’s top scorer Jorgen Strand Larsen failing to score a single goal from open play. The Norwegian bagged 14 last term and formed a formidable partnership with Matheus Cunha but hasn’t had anywhere near the same impact following the Brazilian’s departure and his transfer saga involving Newcastle United.
Wolves expected to return attention to former transfer target
Wolves are expected to try and add some much-needed creativity to the team in January. One target they’re expected to turn their attention back to according to Mail Sport, is Bournemouth gem David Brooks.
The Molineux outfit were linked with the Wales international over the summer but instead opted to go for Jhon Arias from Brazilian side Fluminense and the inexperienced Fer Lopez from Celta Vigo. Between them the pair are yet to register a goal and they have contributed just one assist.
Brooks is also goalless this term but has vastly superior experience in the Premier League which could make him a game-changer. Overall, he’s played 97 top-flight matches, scoring 11 times and registering seven assists.
The 28-year-old was often a rotation option throughout last term, making just nine league starts and appearing 20 times from the bench. However, at present he’s playing more frequently, starting seven matches and appearing as a sub three times in the league.
Who else are Wolves likely to target in January?
Out-of-favour Everton winger Dwight McNeil could emerge as a target for Wolves in January. McNeil lit up the Premier League in the early months of last season when playing in a central attacking midfield role but has hardly been used since David Moyes replaced Sean Dyche in the dugout. He’s experienced in a relegation battle and is capable of adding a bit of technical quality and creativity to a struggling Wolves side.
Fulham’s Harrison Reed, another out-of-favour midfielder, could also be seen as a steady target to sign on loan given his lack of game time. However, it’ll largely depend on whether Fulham are willing to negotiate with a potential relegation rival given their poor start to the campaign.
