Liverpool are considering their options on the January transfer window

Liverpool are on the market for a new influential midfielder who fits the profile of former Jurgen Klopp signing Thiago Alcantara.

The Reds have a lot of business to consider in 2026 as problems continue to present themselves during this title-defending season. Following their defeat to Manchester City, the reigning champions have plummeted down to eighth in the Premier League table, with the likes of Manchester United, Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur all ahead of them.

With form now concerning fans and pundits alike, the Reds are considering how they can strengthen their ranks in the new year.

Liverpool eye ‘technically gifted’ midfield transfer target

According to CaughtOffside, Liverpool are ‘keeping a close eye’ on Paris Saint-Germain’s Vitinha ahead of the January transfer window. The Reds’ scouts have reportedly identified the Portugal international as ‘one of the most technically gifted midfielders in Europe’.

Vitinha, who is under contract with PSG until 2029, is said to ‘fit the profile’ of midfielder Liverpool have been looking for since Thiago left the club last summer.

The 25-year-old has played centrally, on the wing and as a No.6 throughout his career so far. This season, Vitinha has two goals and eight assists in 16 appearances across all competitions for PSG.

Despite the Reds’ interest in Portuguese star, the report claims it’s ‘unlikely’ they will be able to make a formal approach, unless they sell one of their own midfielders in January.

As things stand, Liverpool’s regular midfield three consists of Ryan Gravenberch, Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai. The summer arrival of Florian Wirtz has also given extra food for thought when it comes to starting line-ups, while the likes of Curtis Jones and Wataru Endo are rotational players.

Liverpool transfer target Vitinha could cost £115 million

Liverpool forked out a significant amount of cash on new signings over the summer, breaking the record for the most money spent by a Premier League club in a single window. They are no strangers to paying the big bucks for players they want.

Vitinha is expected to cost a decent chunk of money. PSG are ‘reluctant’ to part ways with the 25-year-old, as they view him as an ‘untouchable’ asset to their team.

However, the French champions could have their price, as an offer in the region €130 million (£115m) could be enough to tempt them into conversations about selling.

This valuation will be out of budget for many clubs, but Liverpool have been named as suitors who have the means to pay such an amount. Real Madrid and Bayern Munich have also been mentioned as teams who could consider paying the fee, while Arsenal and Juventus have also been named on Vitinha’s ‘growing list of elite admirers’.
