Kaide Gordon continued his impressive form with two goals as Liverpool came from behind to earn a penalty shoot-out triumph at Chesterfield despite slipping out of the EFL Trophy. Gordon netted twice in the final 15 minutes to earn the Reds under-21s side a 2-2 draw at the SMH Group Stadium on Tuesday night before the visitors triumphed 11-10 after a mammoth series of spot kicks to take the bonus point.
Rob Page's side needed to win to have a chance of going through to the knockout stages following earlier defeats at Burton Albion and Crewe Alexandra.
But they will take confidence from another good performance at League Two opposition, with Chesterfield having only lost three of 15 league games this season.
Gordon now has four goals and three assists in his last six U21 games and also featured for the first team from the bench in the League Cup exit to Crystal Palace last month, and will have strengthened claims for a potential loan move in January.
The young Reds, with Calvin Ramsay skippering from right-back and Rhys Williams at centre-back, had the better of the first half but fell behind to two goals in four minutes midway through the second half from a deflected Bailey Hobson strike and a Dylan Duffy effort.
Liverpool, though, continued to push forward and on 76 minutes pulled a goal back in miserable conditions when substitute Josh Sonni-Lambie pounced on a short backpass and teed up Gordon to score.
And in the second minute of additional time, Liverpool pressure forced a short kick from Chesterfield goalkeeper Ryan Boot to be closed down and Gordon netted from sub Kyle Kelly's interception.
In the subsequent shoot-out, all 11 players took a turn from the spot with only Dilan Markanday and Tommy Pilling failing for the home and away team respectively.
And after Gordon, who had gone first, scored his second in the shoot-out and fourth of the game, veteran midfielder John Fleck hit the crossbar for Chesterfield to hand Liverpool victory.
LIVERPOOL (4-2-3-1): Mrozek; Ramsay (Kelly 85), R Williams, Lucky, Davidson; Pinnington, Laffey; Gordon, Pilling, Bradshaw (Sonni-Lambie 71); Onanuga (Pitt 71). Subs: Hall, Miles, Spearing, Airoboma.
