“Nothing compares” – Ander Herrera on match which dwarves Manchester United v Liverpool or City

Former Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera has insisted neither the Manchester derby with Manchester City nor clashes with Liverpool live up to the Argentine Superclásico.

El Periódico Aragón cover comments from him today after he played for Boca Juniors in the big clash with River Plate at La Bombonera.

He joined Boca Juniors in January this season, signing as a free agent from Athletic Club on a deal until the end of 2026.

This was his first appearance in the Superclásico, though. He came on as a substitute and played 16 minutes in Boca Juniors’ 2-0 win. That secured them an automatic place in the 2026 Copa Libertadores.

The Superclásico is considered one of the biggest and most intense football rivalries in world football. For some it is more than just a football match, it’s an Argentina cultural phenomenon that reflects clear divisions in Buenos Aires.

And it seems for Herrera, that means it tops what he experienced in England with Manchester United.

They’ve got their own fierce rivalries, particularly with Liverpool and Manchester United. Herrera faced both sides multiple times during his time at Old Trafford. But he insists they pale in comparison to the big Argentine derby.

“There’s nothing like this clásico,” he said.

“I played in the Manchester derby, a United-Liverpool match, Paris Saint-Germain against Olympique de Marseille, the Basque derby—those were all fantastic matches that I thoroughly enjoyed, spectacular encounters, but nothing compares to this one.”
